Hampton School’s Senior Quiz team reached the national finals of the Senior Schools’ Challenge Quiz, the first time a Hampton Senior team has made the final.
The Schools’ Challenge Quiz is the general knowledge competition for schools across the country, a competition that began nearly 50 years ago. Divided into Senior, Intermediate and Junior competitions, Schools’ Challenge uses a format based on the popular quiz programme University Challenge. The questions are set in rounds, beginning with a starter followed by three bonus questions, normally with a common theme. Over 130 teams started the competition, which began in the Autumn term over seven months ago.
This year, the Senior A team (Piers, Will, Ronit and Sam) had early victories against Nottingham High, King Edward VI and King Edward’s School Birmingham, which saw them win through to the national finals held at The Hall School over the May bank holiday weekend. At the finals the Sixth Formers defeated City of London Boys and quizzing titans, The Perse School, to reach the hotly-anticipated final against London rivals Westminster School. It was a tense battle between the two schools and the senior quizzers showcased a superb array of knowledge on all sorts of trivia from English Literature to Formula One and Biology to Chess. However, it wasn’t to be Hampton’s day, and despite a strong showing, they narrowly lost to Westminster. A fantastic day of quizzing throughout the finals, and a great result to finish as runners up in the national competition.
Not only did our Senior A team make it to the their respective national final, but the Senior B team (Harry, Navik, Avinash and Sam) also reached the final of the Plate competition and took part in an online final hosted by the organisers. The Hamptonians put in an incredibly strong performance in both their quarter final and semi final, defeating South Hampstead High School and Bury Grammar School, respectively. In the final they faced Bolton School and despite some impressive quizzing narrowly missed out on the Plate.
Mrs Marta Watson-Evans, who co-ordinates the quiz teams at Hampton, was delighted with the success of our two senior teams:
I am incredibly proud of both teams’ achievements this weekend. Not only have we reached two finals, already setting new Hampton records, but we brought home a trophy. It was brilliant to compete against other excellent Schools. Well done to All our senior quizzers!
