When the School relocated to the Hanworth Road site in 1939, the Library was situated on the ground floor. Considerably smaller than the extensive collection of books that are currently held within the Schools Library, the 1939 library was nonetheless a prized resource.
As the Library began to grow and expand it became essential to relocate to a larger facility. Funds for the creation of a new Library were raised from Hampton School’s first ‘Financial appeal’ in 1975. At the time, Hampton School had recently become independent, and there were some concerns that the appeal would not be successful because of the increase in School fees. However, despite the initial £125,000 target, the community rallied and the appeal raised over £200,000 (which is worth over £1.5 million today!).
The construction of the familiar T-shaped Library began in 1978 and took six years to finally complete. To recognise the service of the former Headmaster who had over seen the Schools relocation to its current site, ‘The Mason Library’ was officially opened on 14 November 1984 by Lord Dacre (Hugh Trevor-Roper).
