Hampton’s musicians and choristers heralded the festive season with three joyful Christmas Concerts, a wonderful end to a vibrant term of events from our Music department.
Over 340 pupils from across the year groups took to the Hammond Theatre stage to showcase the outstanding talent in our ensembles and choirs. Christmas Concert One included an eclectic mix of performances, ranging from ROAR! (our Lower School choir) giving an exuberant rendition of The Circle of Life from the The Lion King, to the Hampton Sinfonia who performed a Holiday Mash-up which included plenty of Christmas favourites. Christmas Concert Two featured the very first appearance of the Hampton School harp, performing alongside the newly-formed Britten Choir who sang a beautiful version of A Ceremony of Carols.
A highlight of the first two concerts was the appearance of our First Year choirs who had their first experience of performing on the Hammond Theatre stage. The young Hamptonians entertained an audience of family, friends and staff with the festive song Jingle Bells Rock, along with an energetic delivery of Shoulda Been a North Pole Elf, which even included a spot of choreography!
Christmas Concert Three began with the Brass Band, who gave a rousing rendition of Rimmer’s Punchinello March. Voices of Lions‘ energetic performance of Nutcracker Jingles, which also showcased the dancing skills of senior Hamptonians, ensured everyone was full of Christmas cheer, and the Chamber Choir ended the first half with a playful rendition of The Twelve Days of Christmas. The concert also included the debut appearance of our new Percussion Ensemble, who performed the exciting Sabre Dance.
Highlights included two impressive solo performances by Upper Sixth musicians Charlie Bishop and Tomás Escobar, superbly accompanied by the 60-strong Symphony Orchestra. Charlie played Elgar’s famous Cello Concerto, while Tomás performed Schumann’s Piano Concerto and both performances were simply breathtaking. There was a fantastic end to the musical celebration, as the Symphony Orchestra performed Kabalevsky’s overture to Colas Breugnon with aplomb.
