The earliest record of a formal Chess club being founded at Hampton was in the Spring term of 1921. Formed of just 24 members, the club principally held small scale interhouse competitions. In 1923 the club numbers began to expand and there was hope of competing against other local Schools. Sure enough, an initial challenge was presented by Richmond County School. However, it wasn’t until the Club received formal guidance and training from Mr. James (English Teacher and President of the Chess Club) that the club began to truly meet its potential.
But who was Mr. James? Outside of his role as an English Teacher, Mr. James not only formalised the Chess Club, but was also heavily involved in the Schools Dancing clubs and Scout unit. Additionally, Mr. James and his Wife founded Denmead School (latterly Hampton Prep and Pre-prep) in their home. After 29 years of teaching, Mr. James left Hampton Senior School to become the Headmaster at Denmead from 1952 – 1970.
