We’re delighted to welcome the Rt Hon the Lord Patten of Barnes as our inaugural Talk! speaker for the 2024-25 academic year. The life peer’s extraordinary career has included serving as the last Governor of Hong Kong; Chairman of the Conservative Party; Chairman of the BBC Trust; and Chancellor of the University of Oxford.

Lord Patten enjoyed a varied parliamentary career in Margaret Thatcher’s government, serving as MP for Bath and holding several Ministerial posts including under secretary for Northern Ireland, Minister of State at the Education Department, Minister in charge of the Overseas Development Agency. He gained a seat in the Cabinet in 1989 when he was appointed Secretary of State for the Environment – charged with overseeing the controversial ‘Poll Tax’. Chris Patten took up his post as the 28th and last Governor of Hong Kong in 1992 until it was returned to Chinese rule in 1997.
