What a year for our quizzers! Following the success of our senior quiz team, who finished runners up in the national finals of the Schools’ Challenge Quiz competition, our intermediate team have gone one better and been crowned national champions.
The Schools’ Challenge Quiz is a general knowledge competition for schools across the country. Divided into Senior, Intermediate and Junior competitions, Schools’ Challenge uses a format based on the popular quiz programme University Challenge. The questions are set in rounds, beginning with a starter followed by three bonus questions.
The Hampton School Intermediate A team, which comprised Fourth Year Ben (captain) alongside Albert, Alex and Umair, were one of eight teams who qualified for the national finals after three rounds of online matches against Hereford Cathedral School, Wetherby School and Calday Grange School. Held at The Hall School, the team had early victories against George Heriot’s School and Magdalen College School, which saw them win through to the final against King Edward’s School, Birmingham. It was an incredibly competitive battle between the two schools, with the Hamptonians showcasing a superb array of knowledge, as well as being speedy on the buzzers. With the final score at 540-350 in Hampton’s favour, our young quizzers were crowned national champions, a first in Hampton quizzing history.
Not only did our Intermediate A team make it to the their respective national final, but the B team (Joshua, Alfie, Kanishk and Milo) also reached the final of the Shield competition at the same competition. The Hamptonians put in an incredibly strong performance to make it to the final where they faced George Heriot School, and despite some impressive quizzing narrowly missed out on winning the Shield.
