Historically you could learn a lot from a Hampton Pupils School Cap. The Caps were black and had the School emblem on the front above the peak. The School emblem, consisting of three rampant lions within a shield, would have either had a Navy, Light blue, Green or Red background, to denote which School house the Pupil was in. Equally if the Cap had a Yellow ring around the head, this indicated that the Pupil was a prefect. Lastly, at the very top of the Cap, there was a black button. As we can see in this certificate, it was only once a Pupil had proved that they could “Dive in and Swim 40 Yards” that they would be awarded a Yellow button for his School Cap. Who knew you could learn so much from one object?
