From Jazz, to Choral, to Rock, Music has always been an integral part of the Hampton School experience. However, it wasn’t until the School relocated to its current site on Hanworth Road in 1939, that it had the capacity to expand its musical ambitions.
In 1946, through an amalgamation of various smaller clubs and groups, the School formally established a unified Music Society. In addition to meeting regularly for rehearsals and concerts, this formative Society benefitted from occasionally attending gramophone recitals in the Library! As the Society developed, it acquired two Gramophones, a Radiogram, as well as a collection of records. The collection of records was frequently supplemented by members to create a vast an eclectic range of genres.
Eventually, as a result of the societies growing popularity, the term ‘Music Society’ became an umbrella term to encapsulate the ‘Music Society’, ‘Choral Society’, the ‘Rhythm Club’ as well as the Schools growing ‘Orchestral society’.
Today, the Music department is situated in The Garrick building. This purpose-built facility was named after the famous 18th-century actor and theatre producer David Garrick and formally opened 3rd July 1978. Housing the Music Department, it serves as a versatile performance and teaching space to support the 50+ musical events every year.
