The mulberry tree (Morus nigra) that grows in the Cloisters at Hampton School, was originally planted in the Headmaster’s garden, at the Upper Sunbury Road site, in about 1929. The tree was planted their by Mr. A. S. Mason (Headmaster 1924-1950). When the School relocated to its current site on Hanworth Road in 1939, the tree was moved to its current position.

After transplanting it, Mr. Mason commented that ‘Given freedom from drastic damage there is no reason why it should not live to see Hampton Grammar School three centuries older than it now is.’

Following Mr. Masons prediction, as we approach the first century since its relocation, the tree (alike the School) continues to grow and flourish.
