Reaching new heights

An unwavering characteristic that distinguishes Hamptonians is their adventurous spirit. In 1994, the School site expanded significantly with the construction of a new Sixth Form centre (the Alexander Centre), as well as a new pavilion and lecture theatre. Yet for the adventurous Hamptonian, potentially the most exciting addition to the School site was the installation of a new climbing tower and arch.

This new feature enabled pupils to learn not only the rudiments, but also some advanced techniques on site. The intent, however, was not to provide the required facilities to support those already comfortable on the ropes, but to expand the horizons of all.

Formally opened on 24 June 1994, the climbing wall and arch were (unsurprisingly) popular. The increasing popularity of the climbing equipment continued to grow and in 2023 the School was pleased to incorporate a new climbing tower, which stands at over 26 feet tall, with nine climbing lines and 18 roped routes.

Can you remember scaling these walls?
