As the School rapidly approaches its 500th year, it is topical to reflect on the development of the Schools History Society.
Initially, the society was known as the Literary, Historical and Debating Society. Whilst various forms of debating society had existed prior to this, the L.H.D.S. was formally established to enable Pupils to debate all matters past and present. This cumulative society was established in the spring of 1947.
However, in the Autumn of 1950, Pupils with a specific historical interest were able to join the newly founded Junior Historical Society. Activities in this society included, but were by no means limited to, watching historical films, quizzes, as well as lectures and engaging seminars. The Society also had charge of the exhibitions in the School Museum, which changed from time to time, by the Museum Committee.
The Club also hosted excursions to visit places of historical interest; including, the Tower of London, Westminster Abbey, and the United Services Museum, the British Museum, Hampton Court Palace and the Festival of Britain – to name but a few.
