Is leaving a charitable gift tax efficient?

The simple answer is: yes.

What if I have already written my will?

What kind of gift can I leave?

There are several different types of gift you could consider making:

Pecuniary

You leave a specific sum of money to the Fitzwygram Foundation. However, the value of a pecuniary bequest may be eroded over time by inflation, so you may wish to consider index linking your gift to protect against this.

Residuary

You leave all or part of the remainder of your estate, after all other bequests have been made and any debts and expenses have been paid, to the Fitzwygram Foundation. This sort of bequest would protect the value of your gift, as the value of the gift would increase in line with the value of your estate.

Specific Bequest

It may be that you would like to bequeath something other than money to the Fitzwygram Foundation, for example property, shares or other valuables such as a painting or jewellery.

Reversionary

In this situation you leave your assets to trustees for the benefit of friends or family members during their lifetime, with all or a portion of the capital going to the Fitzwygram Foundation after their deaths.

Conditional Bequest

If none of your other named beneficiaries survive you, you can leave your estate to a charity such as the Fitzwygram Foundation.

Do I need to let you know?

If you do leave a gift to us in your will, it’s your choice whether you tell us – we respect your privacy. If you’re happy to share your decision, it will help us to plan for the future.

You can let us known by emailing fitzwygram@hamptonschool.org.uk.

LET US KNOW ABOUT YOUR PLEDGE TO FITZWYGRAM FOUNDATION

Alongside their spouse/partner, everyone who leaves a gift in their will to the Fitzwygram Foundation becomes a member of the Hammond Society. Members are invited to Hampton music and dramatic performances, as well as an annual benefactors’ event. We would love to recognise your gift throughout your life, and look forward to welcoming you to the Society.

What will my gift achieve?

All gifts to the Fitzwygram Foundation, including legacies, transform young lives by offering compassionate and rigorous means-tested Free Places to boys who wouldn’t otherwise benefit from the Hampton experience. Fitzwygram award-holders are able to take every opportunity at Hampton thanks to support with fees, uniform, trips, music lessons, and even the bus to school.

What’s the difference between online wills and DIY wills?

DIY Will Kits can be found at your local Post Office or stationery shop. They offer a simple guide to writing a will from scratch and are technically legally binding when signed with a witness. However, DIY Will Kits won’t work for everyone. You can learn more about Post Will Kits, their pros and cons, and the other options available here. This will help you work out what will work best for you.

Online will-writing services allow you to take the stress out of the process with easy-to-use tools and on-hand support. But their main benefit is that you can feel confident that your wishes will be followed – thanks to the fact each will is reviewed by a will expert to make sure it’s ship-shape before you sign it. This reduces the risk of your will being rendered invalid.

It's free, why do I have to input my credit card details?

You’ll still need to enter your card details to finalise the transaction, even though the will is free. There won’t be any charge made to your card.

Octopus Legacy do offer a £10 a year subscription service that allows you to make unlimited changes to your will for free for the first year and only £10 per year after that.

You can cancel this service at any time.

They offer this because a will is a living document so most people update it every 5 years or every time they have a major life change. Traditionally this was really expensive – involving starting from scratch each time, or paying hefty fees for will amendments (codicils).

Their will subscription service allows you to easily amend your will at any point AND save money over time (even if you only update it every 8 years).

How do I unsubscribe from the will update service?

To cancel your subscription, you’ll need to go to your will dashboard (https://octopuslegacy.com/will/dashboard) then on the right-hand side you’ll see a little question mark next to ‘Resubmit for checking’.

If you hover over that question mark, there should be a prompt to “Manage my subscription” and there you’ll find steps on how to cancel the subscription service.

Why am I seeing a £50 charge?

Octopus Legacy offers a bundle deal when writing your will, so you can also get your Lasting Power of Attorney sorted for only £50 (normally £120), if you don’t want an LPA you can simply remove this from checkout.
